If you're a laid-off employee or an HR leader looking into Mercer’s outplacement service, you’d probably expect to find plenty of reviews. But we couldn’t find any publicly accessible reviews we could independently verify.

We checked the main places you’d expect to find outplacement reviews. Gartner Peer Insights lists Mercer Outplacement Services, but its review content isn’t publicly accessible enough for us to independently verify.

G2 doesn’t list Mercer in its Outplacement Services category, and the Mercer reviews it does have are for Benefits Consulting, not career transition services. Trustpilot is similar: its Mercer reviews are mainly about the UK pension business, not outplacement.

Mercer’s own site doesn’t publish customer testimonials for this service either, relying instead on general claims about faster job placement, which we’ll look at later.

There’s a structural reason this gap might exist, and it changes how you should read the whole review picture. More on that in the next section.

About Mercer Outplacement Services

mercer outplacement review

Mercer’s outplacement service is part of Mercer rather than a separate company. Mercer itself operates under Marsh McLennan, the global professional services firm behind Marsh, Guy Carpenter, and Oliver Wyman. The company’s history goes back to 1871, when Henry W. Marsh started an insurance agency in Chicago.

Mercer began in Vancouver, Canada, in 1945, when actuary William Manson Mercer started his own consulting firm. The idea grew from pension work he had done a year earlier for the Powell River Company. Marsh & McLennan later acquired Mercer in 1959 and added it to its employee benefits business.

According to Mercer’s own Career Transition Services terms and conditions, “Mercer (US) LLC is listed as the reseller, while INTOO, LLC is listed as the actual provider”. So when someone uses “Mercer outplacement,” the service is delivered through a Mercer-branded version of INTOO’s platform and coaching network.

This could also explain why there are so few reviews under the Mercer name. Feedback about the actual service may appear under INTOO instead, since INTOO is listed separately on platforms like G2 and Gartner and has its own customer reviews.

Marsh McLennan officially changed its parent company name to Marsh in January 2026. Mercer and the other business units are moving to the Marsh brand more gradually, with the wider transition expected to begin in 2027.

Some Mercer sites, such as iMercer, already show “Mercer is now Marsh,” but Mercer still operates under its own name for now.

Pros and Cons

Since there aren’t many public reviews to rely on, these pros and cons are based on how the service works, what Mercer says it offers, and how useful those features are for people looking for a new job.

Pros

  • Unlimited 1:1 coaching, available seven days a week.
  • Coaches are master’s educated with 14+ years of average experience.
  • Coaching is available in 37 languages through text, phone, or video.
  • Mercer says its virtual model costs 30% to 50% of traditional outplacement.
  • Lower costs may make it easier for employers to offer support to more employees.

Cons

  • Very few independent reviews are available under the Mercer name.
  • It is a coaching-plus-platform model, not a done-for-you job search service.
  • Employees still handle job searching, applications, follow-ups, and networking themselves.

How Much Mercer Outplacement Costs

Mercer does not publish pricing for its outplacement service anywhere publicly.

Mercer Outplacement's Process

Step 1: Employer requests a demo:
The company contacts Mercer after a layoff, restructuring, or merger and discusses employee levels, headcount, and support needs.

Step 2: Mercer sets up the program:
A program is selected based on the employer’s requirements and contract.

Step 3: Employees receive platform access:
Affected employees get 24/7 access to the outplacement platform.

Step 4: Employees start using career tools:
They can use resume and cover letter tools, browse job opportunities, and access Mercer’s AI assistant, Ayla.

Step 5: Employees book coaching:
Unlimited, on-demand coaching is available for resume help, interview preparation, video interview practice, and career assessments.

Step 6: Employees access extra resources:
The platform also includes upskilling courses, live webinars, job alerts, and LinkedIn integration.

Step 7: Support continues for the contracted period:
The length of access depends on the program purchased by the employer.

Mercer Outplacement's Team

Coaches in the Mercer-branded program are described as master's-educated professionals with an average of more than 14 years of experience. Individual coach bios, names, and certifications are not featured on Mercer's public outplacement marketing pages, though that alone doesn't confirm whether that information exists elsewhere.

Mercer’s outplacement service is part of its larger Workforce and Careers practice. The business is led by Pat Tomlinson, President and CEO of Mercer, who oversees its Health, Wealth, and Career services.

Because the actual coaching and platform delivery runs through INTOO as the named service provider, the "team" a client interacts with day-to-day is likely staffed and managed by INTOO, operating under Mercer's brand and reseller agreement, rather than by a team built and run internally by Mercer itself.

Best Mercer Outplacement Alternative: WeAreCareer

Mercer gives employees coaching and job search tools, but they still have to do the actual job hunting themselves. WeAreCareer takes a more hands-on approach by managing much of the search and application process for them.

Instead of a portal you're expected to navigate on your own between coaching sessions, WeAreCareer applies to roles directly on the employee's behalf, alongside resume work, LinkedIn optimization, and interview preparation. It's structured support built to move someone through a job search, not just equip them for one.

WeAreCareer is a New York-based company that says it has helped 3,000+ professionals find new roles. Its more hands-on process can be a better fit for companies that want outplacement support focused on actually getting employees into new jobs, not just giving them tools and coaching.

WeAreCareer has more than 25 interview-style video testimonials from real alumni across its site and YouTube channel.

For companies or individuals who want more hands-on job search support, WeAreCareer is a strong alternative to Mercer.

Bottom Line: Is Mercer Outplacement Worth It?

Mercer has strong coaching credentials, global scale, and an established enterprise reputation. However, there are few publicly verifiable reviews under the Mercer name, and the service is delivered by INTOO through a reseller arrangement, which may not be obvious to customers.

For a service tied to something as high-stakes as a layoff, that's a real gap. If you're an HR leader with the budget and scale to negotiate custom enterprise pricing, Mercer's brand recognition and global reach may still make sense.

But if you're an individual weighing your options, or a company that wants a provider people can actually vouch for and one that takes on the actual job search rather than just supporting it, WeAreCareer is the stronger outplacement choice.
